The port of Kalundu in Uvira, in eastern DR Congo, was hit by airstrikes on Wednesday afternoon, according to the AFC/M23 movement, in an attack the rebels said resulted in loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure. In a statement posted on X, AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka said the bombing occurred at around 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14, when drones operated by the government coalition targeted the busy port on Lake Tanganyika. “The Kinshasa regime persists in its violations of the ceasefire,” Kanyuka said. “Drones from the regime's coalition forces bombed the port of Kalundu, in Uvira, causing significant material damage as well as loss of life.” Urgent Le régime de Kinshasa persiste dans ses violations du cessez-le-feu. Kalundu port is a critical gateway on Lake Tanganyika, supporting cross-border trade, passenger transport and humanitarian movements between South Kivu province and neighbouring Burundi and Tanzania.
