Members of the Rwanda Football Association (FERWAFA) have voted to expel Kirehe FC from its membership after the club remained inactive for three consecutive years. The decision was taken during FERWAFA’s Ordinary General Assembly held at the Kigali Serena Hotel on Saturday, January 10. Addressing the assembly, FERWAFA Secretary General Bonnie Mugabe explained that the move was necessitated by Kirehe FC’s prolonged absence from all FERWAFA-sanctioned football activities. “Kirehe FC has not participated in any federation competitions for the past three years, and during that period, we have not received a single letter from the club,” Mugabe said. Some assembly members argued that the expulsion was long overdue, claiming the club effectively was disbanded. However, the federation maintained that it had never been officially informed of the club’s dissolution or any merger. “We were not informed of any change in status. We did not receive any communication indicating that Kirehe FC had merged with Etoile de l’Est or ceased operations,” said FERWAFA president Fabrice Shema. Kirehe FC last featured in Rwanda’s top-flight league in 2017 before being relegated to the second division. The club continued to compete at that level until withdrawing from the league in 2022, after which it remained inactive.
