Mamady Doumbouya has been declared the winner of the presidential election according to provisional results, marking the country’s first poll since the military seized power in 2021. Results released on Tuesday show Doumbouya securing 86.72 per cent of the vote in the election held on December 28. The Supreme Court has up to eight days to confirm the outcome should any legal challenges be filed. The vote concludes a transition process that began after Doumbouya removed President Alpha Condé from office four years ago. Condé had been president since 2010. Doumbouya has a military background spanning about 15 years, during which he served on missions in Afghanistan, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, the Central African Republic, Israel, Cyprus, the United Kingdom and Guinea. Prior to assuming the presidency, he was a member of the Guinean army’s Special Forces Group and previously served as a French Foreign Legionnaire.
