Police HC closed Phase One of the National Handball League at the top of the regular season standings after defeating rivals APR HC 34–28 in a tightly contested derby played on Friday, December 12, at Petit Stade. Both teams entered the match unbeaten, but it was Antoine Ntabanganyimana’s side that emerged victorious, largely thanks to outstanding performances from star players Samuel Mbesutunguwe and Yves Kayijamahe who scored 21 goals between them. The encounter began at a high tempo, with both teams battling for control during the opening 30 minutes. APR adopted a defensive approach in the first half, but Police’s relentless attacking play proved too strong, allowing them to take an 18–16 lead at halftime. It is a joyful moment for us and our fans,” said Mbesutunguwe, who finished as the match’s top scorer with 13 goals. “This result gives us confidence that even the league championship is within our reach.” Regular season standings (Phase 1) APR HC – 15 points Police HC – 12 points Gicumbi HC – 10 points ADEGI Gituza – 8 points GS Tabagwe – 6 points Musanze HC – 4 points Nyakabanda HC – 2 points ES Kigoma – 0 points
