Kigali Universe once again became the home of classics as an already popular Oldies Music Festival night took music lovers back through the golden decades of pop culture—the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. Since its debut edition in 2022, the festival has evolved into one of Rwanda's must-attend cultural events, a celebration where generations unite under the banner of timeless melodies and unforgettable rhythms. Fashion also holds a special place at the event as concert goers change their style not only to impress but to also recall their old good days. The 6th edition, which took place on Saturday, December 6, proved why Oldies Music Festival has earned that reputation of producing legendary sounds that spark nostalgia among its audience, dominated by adults. The musical journey began with celebrated DJs Ira, Karim, and RY commanding the decks. Their proven experience was evident as they curated a masterful blend of old school anthems. The playlist read like a who's who of music history. The likes of 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Nelly, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and 2Pac dominated the speakers; their music still carrying the power to fill dance floors decades later. Hip hop, pop, and R&B flowed seamlessly into Latin American and Caribbean rhythms, with salsa beats compelling even the most reserved festivalgoers to move. MC Anita Pendo, one of Rwanda's most celebrated hosts, moved through the crowd, drawing out stories and memories that each song carried—tales of first dances, club nights, and carefree moments when these tracks were fresh on the radio. The night wasn't just about international hits. Old music lovers showed deep appreciation for Rwanda's own musical treasures—the beloved 'Karahanyuze' sound. Miss Shanel's ‘Ndarota’ and Philemon Niyomugabo's ‘Zirikana’ received rousing applause, proving that homegrown vibes runs just as deep. Rwanda's premier live band, Symphony, provided the evening's masterstroke—fusing timeless classics with contemporary rhythms. Their performance demonstrated that nostalgia and innovation aren't opposing forces; they can share the same groove, creating something that honors the past while speaking to the present. As the night drew to a close, one thing was clear; the Oldies Music Festival isn't just about looking back. It's about celebrating the music that shaped generations, the memories that define us, and the universal language that continues to bring listeners together—regardless of which decade they call their favorite.
