GIC unveils $100m project to construct Kimironko Commercial Complex

Gasabo Investment Company Ltd (GIC) unveiled a $100 million Kimironko Commercial Complex project, the first phase of a transformative development that is expected to redefine modern shopping, integrated services, and urban living in one of Kigali’s major commercial hubs in Gasabo District, worth $100 million. The unveiling took place on December 3. Construction is now underway and will take 16 months. The facility is designed as a future-ready landmark and introduces a new standard of convenience, accessibility and retail experience for residents, traders and investors in Gasabo and beyond. GIC, which was established in 2013 to stimulate economic growth and promote shared prosperity among local residents, has since become a key driver of community-oriented investments, ranging from real estate and market modernisation to energy and agriculture initiatives. The Kimironko Commercial Complex is set to become its flagship achievement, combining functionality, innovation and a community-centric vision. Fabrice Shema Ngoga, Chairman of the GIC, said that the complex will have six floors above two basement parking levels with capacity for over 300 vehicles, and a seamless and modernised shopping environment. “It will feature four serviced retail floors with flexible trading spaces, more than 250 business units for sale, priced from Rwf40 million payable in up to 15 installments and over 2,000 vendor stalls,” he explained. “The lower-ground level will host a food market, both perishables and non-perishables, along with clothing shops and others. It will also accommodate the relocation and modernisation of the existing Kimironko Market, while preserving its cultural and economic essence by ensuring that no one is excluded from accessing available rental spaces,” he said. “Every floor will have its own category. Whether you want clothes, food, banking services, insurance, or anything else, you will know exactly which floor to go to without wasting time. It will be very convenient,” he added. The company, which has also acquired the Kimironko Taxi Park, plans to transform it into the Kimironko Bus Terminal, a modern transit hub designed to accommodate 80 buses while improving traffic flow, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency. The two modern facilities will be connected by a sky bridge to allow commuters to move seamlessly between them. This project will also cost over $20million. “The facility will feature organised arrival and departure zones, covered waiting areas, digital ticketing, accessible walk- ways, and strong security. Integrated commercial retail paces including shops and service points will boost convenience for commuters and generate sustainable revenue,” he explained. “Currently, we have over 30,000 passengers accessing the Kimironko Bus Park. We want them to move safely where roads will be for vehicles, while commuters will use the sky bridge to access the bus park. It will provide a more conducive environment,” he said. Shema highlighted that the project aligns with the sports city hub vision, where additional developments, including the second phase of the Gasabo Shopping Center, expected to begin in 2028, will also be constructed to provide indoor entertainment and other economic ecosystem set ups. “The project will include apartments, a mall, a market, commercial buildings, offices, warehouses, showrooms, and parking space to temporarily accommodate over 1,800 cars, among other facilities. Bernard Bayasese, the District Executive Director of Gasabo, commended the initiative, saying it is timely as it aligns with the country’s Vision 2050 and NST2 development priorities, which aim to create jobs and boost market-based economic activity. “The development we want requires us to move faster in all sectors,” he said. “As district and city authorities, whatever support you need, we are ready to provide it whenever you request it.” “This is a good project that aligns with the national vision. It will create jobs, attract investments, drive innovation, and more. It supports our target of creating over 2.5 million jobs. This initiative will benefit many Rwandans, and we thank you for it,” he added.
