Qatar is a trusted partner, says Makolo

Government Spokesperson Yolande Makolo has lauded Qatar as a reliable and strategic partner for Rwanda, highlighting the growing political and economic ties between the two countries. Makolo made the remarks in an interview with Qatari media, as she reflected on the two-day official visit of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, from November 20-21 in Kigali. Pointing out that the Emir's visit is building on the solid foundation laid by both leaders, Makolo said that the bilateral relationship between the two countries is anchored in mutual respect and shared development ambitions. She particularly pointed to education as a key area of collaboration. “We very much appreciate the Zero-Out-Of-School project that is funded by the State of Qatar,” she said, “We have Rwandan students studying in Qatar, and we would like even more students to go there. That is also a part of our strategy for growing our economy.” ALSO READ: Rwanda, Qatar ink deal to boost local drug production, access The spokesperson described the current state of relations between Doha and Kigali as “excellent,” stressing that both sides are committed to further deepening cooperation. Makolo also talked about Qatar’s increasingly prominent role as a global mediator. She referenced Qatar’s facilitation of peace talks between the Congolese government and the AFC/M23 movement, an effort aimed at addressing the root causes of the crisis in eastern DR Congo. The efforts complement the US-supported peace process between Rwanda and DR Congo. “On the political field, the State of Qatar is a trusted partner,” she said. “In peace and security, we value the role Qatar is playing in mediating on important global issues, including the ongoing situation in the Great Lakes region.” Looking ahead, Makolo said Rwanda views Qatar’s strategic investments in the country as a model of productive cooperation, expressing confidence in even stronger ties in the years to come. She noted that the visit of the Emir further expands opportunities for collaboration in ways that are positive and beneficial for both sides. Makolo identified technology, innovation, energy, and agriculture as priority sectors for future partnership. Diversifying Rwanda’s economic base, she said, requires tapping into Qatar’s expertise, particularly in energy, while agriculture remains a cornerstone of Rwanda’s development agenda. Bilateral cooperation between Rwanda and Qatar continues to expand, especially in aviation, security, investment, and hospitality. Earlier this year, Qatar approved a draft mutual visa waiver allowing holders of ordinary Rwandan passports to enter the country freely.
