Quality avocados from Rwandan exporters can now be sold in China following the signing of a new protocol that will see Rwanda get greater access to the Asian country. ALSO READ: Avocado farmers, exporters upbeat about potential access to China The Rwandan embassy in Beijing announced that on Wednesday, November 12, it signed the Protocol on Inspection, Quarantine, and Sanitary Requirements for the Export of Fresh Avocados from Rwanda to China. “This agreement will allow high-quality Rwandan avocados to enter the Chinese market, expanding the range of Rwandan agricultural products exported to China, a market of 1.4 billion consumers,” the embassy stated. ALSO READ: From simple crop to cash cow: How avocado became profitable According to the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB, though the avocado subsector is a relatively new value chain in Rwanda, its exports have registered a high growth. Avocado exports generated about $6.3 million in 2023 from $840,000 in 2020. The government targets to double export revenues to more than $12.9 million by 2029. Currently, major markets for Rwanda’s avocadoes include the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Trade between Rwanda has seen a boost over the past five to six years. Rwanda’s exports to China have seen a rise from $35 million in 2019 to $160.6 million in 2024.
