Rwanda’s first private coding academy opens applications for students

A new opportunity has emerged for students in Rwanda who are passionate about technology. New Generation Academy, a private day school based in Kimihurura, Kigali, has become the first in the country to be officially accredited to teach software programming and embedded systems as a trade. The school is now accepting applications for its new programme, which will start on October 13, 2025. This programme is specifically designed for students who have just completed Senior 3 and performed well in the 2024/2025 national exams. To qualify, applicants need to have scored at least 80% in Mathematics, Physics, and English — subjects considered essential for success in programming and technology fields. In addition to students from the national curriculum, New Generation Academy is also welcoming applicants who studied international programs, such as the Cambridge curriculum, provided they hold an equivalence certificate issued by HEC (Higher Education Council). New Generation Academy has built a strong reputation for its focus on technology in early education. Even in the lower classes, students are introduced to coding, robotics, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The school follows a hands-on, project-based learning model, meaning students learn by doing, not just by listening. He highlighted that introducing this programme at New Generation Academy is a timely and impactful solution because it opens up opportunities for more students, especially those in intervention systems, to access quality tech education that was once out of reach. “We are excited to announce the launch of a new programme that was previously available only at Rwanda Coding Academy (RCA). Due to the limited number of slots at RCA and the high demand from many talented students, several missed the opportunity to participate. Additionally, students following international curricula often found it nearly impossible to access this program,” he said. Tuyisenge also added that the significant milestone was not only for the school but for Rwanda’s broader vision of becoming a regional leader in technology and innovation. “I take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Government of Rwanda for launching the Rwanda Coding Academy, the first of its kind in Africa. By learning programming and embedded systems (the technology behind things like smart devices, robots, and automated machines), students will gain skills that are in demand globally. The programme aims to equip learners with both technical skills and problem-solving abilities. Instructors with real industry experience will guide students through practical projects, preparing them for jobs or further education in technology-related fields.
