Rwandan gospel musician Alexis Dusabe is in his 25th year of ministry and the journey continues. The star singer, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Rwanda’s modern gospel music, hosted several players in the music industry to celebrate the milestone in an ‘invite only’ event held at Dove Hotel, Gisozi, on September 14. Dusabe introduced himself to the music scene in 2000. When he narrates his story, he describes the beginning of his career as “challenging like any person who dares to take a chance.” But, against the odds, he came from a long way to the peak of his career and has gone on to establish himself as one of the most iconic gospel musicians Rwanda has produced. The evening served as both a reflection of his long journey in music and a recognition of the legacy he continues to build. https://x.com/NewTimesRwanda/status/1967299410356035859?t=ClHuEOxP93iC_xzxT_XURA&s=19 During the celebration, Dusabe took an opportunity to present his forthcoming album Amavuta y’Igiciro in an exclusive listening session that gave attendees a glimpse into his latest spiritual offering that is expected to be released on December 14 at the live concert. He explained that the album was born out of the story of the woman caught in adultery, emphasizing the unconditional love and grace of God and of Christ the Messiah. The story is found in the book of John 8:1–11, where the Pharisees brought to Jesus a woman caught in adultery, reminding Him that the law of Moses commanded stoning. Trying to trap Him, they pressed for an answer. Jesus replied, “Let the one without sin cast the first stone.” One by one, her accusers left. The celebration drew a large turnout of fellow gospel musicians, music managers, producers and the members of the press among others who came to honour his contribution. Israel Mbonyi, Mariya Yohana, Masamba Intore, Butera Knowless, Nel Ngabo, Bosco Nshuti, producer Clement Ishimwe, comedians and movie actors Sam Zuby and Bamenya were among those who graced the event. The album left many overwhelmed by Dusabe’s artistic touch on every composition. Some copies of the album were even sold right away. The New Times understands that Dusabe collected Rwf 14 million from the copies sold at the event. Not an easy journey Dusabe told attendees that he began his career under difficult circumstances, with his first song Mfite Umukunzi Utuye Inyuma y'Ibicu released in 2000, and since then, he has remained a consistent and relevant figure in the industry. His music inspired so many artistes who later joined him to the gospel ministry. “In 2005, when the album Umuyoboro was released, I was still in school and would listen to it with an indescribable feeling. It gave me so much joy, and I even tried to sing like him. Thank you for paving the way—it’s extraordinary. I love you, and I’m sure you know it,” said Israel Mbonyi, who bought the new album for Rwf2 million. He may have achieved a lot along the way, but Dusabe is showing no signs of stopping what he started with passion and dedication. “I've celebrated 25 years but it doesn't end here. I'm still on the track. I'm not yet done. The new album has many collaborations including the Swahili song with Israel Mbonyi,” said Dusabe. The singer has been actively working on his fourth album, both in audio and video production. He plans to release songs gradually ahead of the concert, which will be the highlight of his silver jubilee in gospel music. He explained that the album was of the highest caliber in price, with the participation of students from Nyundo School of Arts and Music and other stakeholders. “Music has reached a promising point, thanks to the support of the government,” said Dusabe. “We did it without expecting anything, but now we are earning something. It heals and is a blessing.” While he has yet to reveal the full lineup for the event, he will be the main headliner, aiming to sing a selection of songs that reflect his 25-year journey in the industry.
