Eight people who died on Tuesday, September 9 after a wall collapsed during the construction of a dam in Nyamasheke District will be laid to rest on Thursday, September 11, The New Times has learnt. Narcisse Mupenzi, the Mayor of Nyamasheke, said the burial will be organised by the district. ALSO READ: Eight killed, 10 injured in Nyamasheke dam construction accident “The victims were from Bisumo and Rugali cells in Cyato Sector, and they will be laid to rest in the sector’s cemetery,” Mupenzi told The New Times on Wednesday evening. He said that district officials met with the bereaved families on Wednesday. “We spoke with the families and agreed on the arrangements. The district will take charge of all the logistics,” Mupenzi noted. The accident, which occurred at around 10:30am on Tuesday, also left 10 people injured. They were taken to Kibogora Hospital. Two have since been discharged, one was referred to the University Teaching Hospital of Butare (CHUB), and seven remain admitted at Kibogora. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, while construction work at the dam has been suspended. The dam, measuring between 25 and 30 meters in length and five meters in height, was being built by DNG Rwanda Limited. Its construction started just before COVID-19 pandemic, and was suspended during the health emergency, and resumed in 2022.
