Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva on Friday, September 5, presided over the 20th gorilla naming ceremony Kwita Izina, in Kinigi Musanze District, where thousands of people gathered. The star-studded event, in which 40 baby gorillas were given names, was also graced by First Lady Jeannette Kagame. ALSO READ: Kwita Izina: Who will name baby gorillas this year? Held at the foothills of the Volcanoes National Park since 2005, Kwita Izina reflects conservation efforts that have seen the once-endangered mountain gorillas flourish, alongside socioeconomic development of the communities. The gorilla population in the Virunga Massif, shared by Rwanda, DR Congo and Uganda, has grown from 880 in 2008 to 1063 today.
