Twenty-three boys’ and girls’ teams are set to compete in the 2025 FIBA U16 AfroBasket, scheduled in Kigali from September 2-14. Rwanda will host the continental boys’ tournament for the first time while the girls’ competition will be happening in the country for the second time, marking a significant milestone in the country’s basketball journey. Rwanda’s journey in the 2023 FIBA Africa U16 Boys' Championship ended in the quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by Egypt. They concluded the campaign in fifth place after beating Côte d’Ivoire 74-62 in the classification match. Meanwhile, the girls' team finished seventh after defeating Guinea 54-43 in the classification match. ALSO READ: Rwanda to host U16 Afrobasket 2025 This competition also serves as a qualifier for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup. The champions and runners-up in each category will earn a spot in the World Cup. Girls: Rwanda (Host), Mali, Angola, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania, and Tunisia. Competition system Countries will against each other in the group stage, totalling three games per team. A total of 18 games will be played in the group phase. The top two in each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will qualify for the final phase. The remaining four teams will compete in the classification round for 9th to 12th place. The two best teams in each category will qualify for the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup.
