After years of entertaining audiences across East Africa and beyond, veteran DJ and Ruffcuts DJz co-founder Mohamed Kadir, better known as DJ Kadir, is making a much-anticipated return to Kigali’s nightlife scene. Kadir, whose career spans more than two decades across East Africa, Europe, and North America, is set to make his second appearance at Cave Frequency, hosted at Cave Coffee on Friday August 29. The show follows his electrifying performance at the Old School Festival in 2023, where he entertained thousands of revellers at Juru Park, Rebero. Speaking to The New Times, one of the event organizers described Kadir as a pioneer of Rwanda’s modern DJ culture, predicting his homecoming show as one to remember. DJ Kadir began his musical journey with an early love for entertainment that eventually took him around the globe. In 2004, he moved to the United Kingdom where he honed his skills at some of London’s most vibrant venues, including the iconic Pier One. After five years in the UK scene, he returned to East Africa to co-found the Ruffcuts DJz collective, a group that went on to shape the sound of Kigali’s nightlife throughout the 2000s and early 2010s. Beyond the decks, DJ Kadir has played a pivotal role in nurturing Rwanda’s next generation of DJs. Through Ruffcuts DJz, he mentored several now-prominent names in the industry, including DJ Karim, DJ Toxxyk, DJ Kelly, and DJ Lenzo. He was also part of the jury for the Battle of the DJs, the first DJs contest to ever take place in Kigali in 2022. The jury, which also included Nigeria’s DJ Neptune and Rwanda’s DJ Sharif, named Selekta Danny as the winner. The Cave Frequency homecoming event will also feature performances by other renowned local disc jockeys like Kan, among others.
