Speaker calls for political tolerance

The Speaker of Parliament Rose Mukantabana has stressed the importance of tolerance in the promotion of democracy, as an appropriate way to dispense good leadership. Mukantabana made the remarks while addressing the second meeting of the Third World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, currently underway in New York. During the meeting, Mukantabana emphasized the importance of tolerance in the promotion of democracy, according to a statement from New York. Mukantabana during the meeting addressed the problem of comparing countries without due consideration of the differing contexts, pointing out that polls may not be the most accurate measure and may not always satisfy everyone. “Democracy needs to take into account national circumstances,” the statement quotes the Speaker as saying. Meanwhile, during the meeting, the United Nations Deputy Secretary- General Asha-Rose Migiro, commented on the progress of the UN reform, singling out the success of the “Delivering as One” initiative. She mentioned her recent visit to Rwanda and cited the country’s achievements in gender equality - particularly as the nation with the highest percentage of women in Parliament. She reiterated that these achievements made in Rwanda could be obtained elsewhere with the presence of great political will and the appropriate mechanisms. Ends
