The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Sector North Commander, Maj Gen Nakul Rayamajhi on Monday, August 18, welcomed the newly deployed Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) contingent (Rwanbatt-2) as they relieved their colleagues in Malakal, Upper Nile State. Upon arrival, the Sector Commander received a detailed briefing from Lt Col Robert Rwagihungu, the Rwanbatt-2 Contingent Commander, on the troops' operational readiness and deployment plan. ALSO READ: Rwandan contingent 'backbone' of UN mission to South Sudan The Sector Commander commended the outgoing Rwanbatt-2 for their professionalism and dedication to peacekeeping. He urged the incoming personnel to uphold the highest standards of discipline and training to accomplish their mission of protecting civilians, supporting humanitarian assistance, and contributing to lasting peace in South Sudan. Rwanbatt-2 has now fully assumed its duties in Sector North, continuing Rwanda’s strong contribution to UN peacekeeping efforts. As of May 2025, Rwanda was the second-largest troop contributor to UN missions after Nepal. Some 5,880 Rwandan uniformed personnel, including more than 1,000 police officers, are deployed to various missions.
