International Covenant College is set to open in Rwanda following the cabinet’s approval of a Ministerial Order granting the institution accreditation. The decision was made on Wednesday, July 30, during the Cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame. According to the meeting resolutions, the college will initially offer two academic programs, Digital Media Technology and Early Childhood Development, with plans to gradually expand its course offerings in the coming years. In other education sector development, the Cabinet also approved the allocation of state land to Africa Health Sciences University (AHSU) for the establishment of a dedicated medical education campus. ALSO READ: Rwanda allocates state land to new medical university Established by King Faisal Hospital, AHSU is a newly accredited health sciences institution that seeks to train the next generation of healthcare professionals in medicine, pharmacy, nursing and midwifery, laboratory technology, radiography, and other allied health fields. The university launched its first academic programs in Kigali in September 2024, beginning with the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Midwifery. The inaugural cohort, comprising 40 students selected from 1,423 applicants, has a competitive 2.3 percent acceptance rate, is currently undergoing training at Kacyiru District Hospital, Muhima District Hospital, and King Faisal Hospital Rwanda. King Faisal Hospital established AHSU in line with the Ministerial Order of April 26, 2024, which granted the university legal status and authorized it to begin operations. The order also permits AHSU to offer master's degree programmes in anaesthesiology, emergency medicine, surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics, as well as undergraduate programmes in pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, radiography, and laboratory sciences.
