The Chamber of Deputies has ratified the peace agreement signed on June 27 between Rwanda and DR Congo. The US-brokered agreement was signed in Washington, D.C. by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, and his Congolese counterpart, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, on behalf of their countries. It entails a number of points, major of which is the neutralisation of the FDLR, a genocidal militia founded by remnants of the perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and the lifting of Rwanda’s defensive measures. During a parliamentary session on Tuesday, July 29, 76 members of the Chamber of Deputies unanimously voted in favour of the agreement, which seeks to restore peace in the Great Lakes Region by addressing longstanding security issues.
