The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) recently reported over 250 cases of genocide ideology during the 100 days of the commemoration of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. This alarming figure is not just a number, but it is also a wake-up call. Most of these cases- 205, are related to genocide ideology, reflecting an eight percent rise from the previous year. 46 of the cases are related to discrimination and incitement to divisionism. Although we have made extraordinary progress in rebuilding the social fabric and fostering national unity, the persistence of genocide ideology shows that our work is far from over. ALSO READ: Genocide ideology: 250 cases recorded during Kwibuka 31 The fact that genocide ideology continues during Kwibuka, a time meant for reflection, mourning, and recommitment, makes them even more disturbing. They do not just offend survivors; they endanger national stability by sowing seeds of division. The responsibility to counter genocide ideology lies with all of us. Government institutions must continue enforcing the law and strengthening civic education. Schools should deepen students’ understanding of Rwanda’s history, emphasizing critical thinking and empathy. Media and influencers must promote truth and actively call out harmful narratives. If we are to truly say “Never Again,” we must confront ideology where it appears. This could be online, in classrooms, in homes, and on the streets. Every generation must take ownership of this fight, young people especially, whose present and future the country depends on. Denial and revisionism are not just crimes. They are betrayals of those who were killed during the Genocide and those who survived. We must therefore speak up, educate, and protect the hard-earned peace Rwanda holds today.
