The construction works on Kirehe district gymnasium will be completed by the end of June, according to Mayor Bruno Rangira. The facility, which is expceted to cost Rwf 2.7 billion, is being built on the site of the former Kirehe Stadium in Nyakarambi. It will be an indoor facility for various sports like volleyball and basketball, with a comfortable seating capacity of 1,200. “Our gymnasium will be structurally completed by the end of June, and we expect to launch it in the mid-July,” Rangira told Times Sport. Construction works on the gymnasium had been put on hold after a recent accident on the site killed two workers. Rangira explained that the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) investigated the case and, after their families were compensated, the construction process resumed. “It's true the accident happened. RIB went through the case and, after fully complying with the established safety measures, we were permitted to continue the construction,” he explained. The Kirehe gymnasium is the latest project of the seven gymnasiums in Rwanda of which 10,000-seater Arena is the biggest. Others include Petit Stade Amahoro Indoor Gymnasium, Lycée de Kigali, NPC Gymnasium, Kimisagara Youth Sports Centre, Groupe de la Salle, UR-Huye and Green Hills Academy. The gymnasium could become home of Kirehe VC which could mark a comeback to topflight volleyball next season which will tentatively commence in October.
