Though the 21st edition of the Rutsindura Memorial volleyball tournament aimed to expand by inviting foreign clubs, it wasn't possible due to their tight league calendars, Alphonse Nsengiyumva, the tournament director has said. The annual volleyball tournament is held in memory of Alphonse Rutsindura, the former national team player and coach who was killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. ALSO READ: Rutsindura Memorial tourney expands, attracts Ugandan teams The competition has continued to expand its categories from eight to eleven, with the addition of girls’ high school teams, college and university teams, and junior beach volleyball teams. “We tried to invite different clubs from East Africa, like Kenya. They were ready, but their leagues are not finished yet,” Nsengiyumva said. The main competition for young talents is already underway, while the senior category will start on May 24 and continue with the finals taking place the following day. So far, the senior category includes clubs like Kepler (men and women), REG (men and women), Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) women's club, Police VC (men and women), Gisagara VC (men), and APR VC (men and women).
