Renowned fashion designer Moses Turahirwa, founder of Moshions, has been sent on 30-days remand after Kicukiro Primary Court ruled that there are reasonable grounds for suspecting him of drug use-related charges on Friday, May 9. Turahirwa is facing charges including transporting, storing, and using narcotic drugs. During the ruling, the presiding judge said that besides the reasonable grounds, the fashion designer had previously faced similar charges but continued the alleged activities. The court further mentioned that although Turahirwa had claimed to suffer mental health problems, no medical report was provided to substantiate the claim. The judge also argued that Turahirwa could receive any necessary medical treatment while in detention. During a bail hearing, held on May 6, the prosecution highlighted that Turahirwa's arrest followed an ongoing investigation and tips from community members regarding his alleged drug use. Authorities reportedly found him in possession of 13 packets of cannabis, and tests conducted by the Rwanda Forensic Institute revealed high amounts of drugs in his blood system. Prosecutors stated that upon his arrest, Turahirwa admitted to obtaining the drugs from Kenya, leading to an additional charge of illegal transportation. They further requested his remand, citing ongoing investigations into his alleged drug trafficking and emphasizing that he was not a first-time offender. Turahirwa pleaded guilty to drug use but disputed the quantity. He claimed he only had less than two mg of hybrid cannabis, which he said he voluntarily handed over to the police during his arrest.
