The 2025 Race to Remember will attract at least 135 riders from various categories, the local cycling governing body (FERWACY). The race, scheduled for Sunday, April 27, is orgqanised annually by FERWACY in partnership with the National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC), as a special occasion to pay tributes to more than 1 million victims slain during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Cycling is among sports that lost key figures during the genocide including cyclists, cycling enthusiasts and officials. Beyond remembrance, Ferwacy president, Samson Ndayishimiye said that the idea is to organize a competitive race which can improve the level of performance of participating riders. “We are expecting many cyclists during the race and we are calling Rwandans to come and join us to remember. The competition is open to everyone and we believe we will have good event,” Ndayishimiye said. ALSO READ: Cycling: Virunga XCO mountain bike series debuts in Musanze According federation’s executive director, Regis Gahuranyi, at least 135 riders registered to compete. The men’s race will feature three categories namely men elite, U23 men and men juniors. They will cover a distance of 113km from Canal Olympia Rebero to Nemba and back to Canal Olympia. The elite women, U23 women, junior and amateurs will also compete for the distance of 71.8 kilometers from Canal Olympia-Nyamata-Canal Olympia. Former Benediction Club's Eric Manizabayo and Djazilla Mwamikazi won the 2024 edition in men and women’s categories respectively. ALSO READ: Cycling: Ferwacy to introduce new races this year On the occasion of the Race to Remember, the cycling fraternity will honour various members who were killed during the genocide. According to information from Ferwacy, some of the riders killed during the Genocide include; Edouard Gasinzigwa and Théophile Gahutu [Ciné Elmay cycling club], Kayumba and Kayibanda [Club Rwamagana]. Others were Henriette based [Club Ruhengeri], François Musoni [Club Butare], Anselme Sakumi, a former Ferwacy Vice-Chairman, and Gasato, who was a national team rider.
