Rwanda National Police in Rubavu town apprehended two people suspected of stealing a vehicle, on Friday, April 24. The suspects, identified as Eric Kubwimana, 32, and his wife, Claudine Uwimanimpaye, 29, are in custody for the theft of a Toyota Vanguard, with plate number CGO 4545AE 22. The vehicle was reported stolen on April 21, from Ubwiza Village, Nengo Cell, in Gisenyi Sector. According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Police Spokesperson for Western Province, the suspects were domestic workers at the home of the car owner, Mitterrand Rurangwa Rutaragarama. ALSO READ: Four arrested over counterfeiting US dollars in Rubavu The homeowner was unaware of their marital relationship as they worked as housekeepers and would leave the premises at night. The stolen car was discovered hidden at the residence of Edison Uwimana in Rubavu Sector, leading to the suspects' arrest and the vehicle's return to its owner, Karekezi explained. The couple, according to him, is held by Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) at Gisenyi Police Station for an ongoing investigation. We commend the citizens who provided crucial information that facilitated the arrest of these individuals, SP Karekezi added. We urge everyone to actively participate in crime prevention by sharing vital information, as it is fundamental to our efforts. We remind the public that theft is not a sustainable way of life but leads to loss and imprisonment, causing distress to families. Upon conviction, the couple risk a term of imprisonment of not less than one year and not more than two years, as well as a fine ranging from Rwf1 million to Rwf2 million. A court may also impose a sentence of community service for a period of six months, either as an alternative or in addition to the other penalties.
