Rwandan-American basketball prodigy Nate Ament has explained the story behind “Rwanda pe,” his newly launched Reebok signature sneaker that is inspired by Rwanda. Born to a Rwandan mother and an American father, Ament, 17, is one of the hottest young basketball talents in the USA. He is considered a top prospect for the 2026 NBA draft. He has a long term deal with Reebok, a famous American shoe and clothes label. In this article, Times Sport presents an interview he had with Damas Sikubwabo on his signature shoe, as well as his connection with Rwanda. Read the excerpts below. Q. After launching the sneaker, talk to us about the inspiration behind its design. A. Obviously my mom is Rwandan and the country means a lot to me. My mother is a big reason I play this sport, so I was set on my first “pe” to be a tribute to her. The flag is appealing to the eyes and beautiful colours, so it was an easy decision. Q. Talking about the design, what is it about the shoe that you like or find fitting in Nate’s basketball journey? A. The overall design of the shoe is the engine “a.” We went through hours of different designs and colourways. My brothers and I all sat down with the designer and made like 100 different versions. It was a lot of fun and I think we found the perfect mix. Q. Are there any personalised details on the shoe? A. The details on the shoe are what I love the most. My logo is obviously on there but the sun on the heel, flag on the tongue, and colours mixed at the bottom are what makes me really love the shoe and feel my own. Q. What is Nate’s perspective? Is the shoe versatile or it's only meant for athletes? A. I am going to have to try it out with some off-the-court outfits and get back to you on that. Q. Are there further proposed collaborations in the pipeline between you with the Rwanda Basketball League. Big things are coming for sure. I plan on getting out to Rwanda this summer and taking a look at the overall landscape to help out any way I can without making it all about me. And for sure I want to see my family while I am out there.
