Mozambique's Assembly of the Republic unanimously and by acclamation approved a bill on Wednesday on the political commitment to an inclusive national dialogue and peace. The document, submitted to the parliament by President Daniel Chapo, establishes principles for a comprehensive debate process for reforms in the state, the justice system, and the country's electoral model. The proposal was supported by all four parliamentary groups, namely Frelimo, Podemos, Renamo, and MDM. Eduardo Mulembwe, the minister in the presidency for parliamentary, local government and provincial assembly affairs who presented the document to the members of parliament, highlighted that the initiative seeks to overcome the country's current political and economic challenges, and promote effective reconciliation among Mozambicans, the consolidation of national unity, social harmony, political stability, and the strengthening of state institutions. The law also mandated the establishment of a 21-member technical team, with 18 representatives appointed by political parties and three by civil society. The political commitment was signed on March 5 between the government and parties with seats in the country's various legislative bodies. The government and lawmakers expressed hope for the new legislation to strengthen Mozambique's political and institutional stability, ensure greater inclusion in national decision-making, and foster a conducive environment for development.
