Qatar Airways to resume direct flights to Kigali in May

Qatar Airways has announced plans to resume direct flights between Doha and Kigali from May 14, according to Travel And Tour World. The development marks the reintroduction of a previously operated route, which included a stopover until December 2021. Under this plan, Qatar Airways intends to operate four weekly flights using the Airbus A320, in a move expected to enhance Rwanda’s position as a growing regional aviation hub. Qatar airways has a partnership with RwandAir, including in cargo operations. They two airlines had singed a codeshare agreement in 2021. For Rwanda, the return of Qatar Airways’ direct service from Doha to Kigali represents a strategic step towards strengthening its status as a key player in East African tourism. The country has been steadily investing in its tourism sector, promoting itself as a prime destination for eco-tourism, adventure travel, and business conferences. By restoring a direct link to one of the world’s most connected airline hubs—Hamad International Airport in Doha—Rwanda stands to gain from increased inbound tourism and improved access for outbound travellers seeking destinations beyond Africa. Qatar and Rwanda have cultivated a robust partnership since establishing diplomatic relations in May 2017. The collaboration spans various sectors, including infrastructure development and aviation. Notably, Qatar Airways acquired a 60 per cent stake in Rwanda's Bugesera International Airport project in December 2019, aiming to position the country as a central African aviation hub. High-level engagements have further strengthened bilateral ties.
