Rwandan comedian and radio personality Japhet Mazimpaka has been nominated for the Africa Golden Awards 2025. It is his first career nomination at a continental level since joining comedy nearly a decade ago. The Africa Golden Awards celebrate top achievers driving progress across the continent in various fields, including entrepreneurship, innovation, arts, technology, and humanitarian efforts. The awards aim to honor individuals and organizations whose resilience and impact shape Africa’s future, while fostering partnerships that promote leadership and sustainable development. Japhet, who is also a presenter public broadcaster’s Radio Rwanda, was nominated for Best Male Radio Presenter and Best Male Stand-Up Comedian. In his nomination acceptance, the comedian expressed his gratitude for the recognition which, he said, “confirms that the effort I’ve put into both local and international performances is paying off. It also serves as a reminder that art knows no boundaries.” He added that seeing his name alongside globally respected comedians like South African comedian Trevor Noah, as well as other nominees from Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and beyond, is a great honor. “It’s a privilege to see Rwanda’s flag represented on such a platform. From the very beginning, I have been grateful for the support I have received. Now, I ask for that support once more—I encourage everyone to vote for me at www.africagoldenawards.com in both categories” he said. Mazimpaka, who rose to prominence alongside fellow comedian Etienne in their comedy concept “Bigomba Guhinduka, also acknowledged the impact of working with international comedians, which has reinforced his belief that Rwandan stand-up comedians have the talent and determination to compete on the global stage. “We are fortunate to have a country like Rwanda, which provides peace and security—essential elements that allow artists to thrive and be creative,” he said. “This environment enables us to focus on our craft and continue growing,” he noted. “I encourage everyone to keep supporting Rwandan comedians. With sustained support, we can achieve much more than just these nominations.” Japhet is vying for the continental prize against the likes of Trevor Noah and Tats Nkonzo (South Africa), Dr. Hillary Okello, Patrick Salvado, and Kaptain Kreative (Uganda), Basketmouth and Bovi (Nigeria), Arnold Saviour, Tom Daktari, Njugush, and Sammy Kioko (Kenya), Coy Mzungu (Tanzania), Eddie Kadi (Congo), and OB Amponsah (Ghana). For the Best Male Radio Presenter award, Japhet is also the only Rwandan nominee in the category, competing against well-known presenters from across the continent. Meanwhile, Mazimpaka is not the only Rwandan recognized in the Africa Golden Awards 2025. Other nominees include Bruce Melodie (Male Artist of the Year), Aline Gahongayire and Israel Mbonyi (Best Gospel Artist) as well as Meddy (Best Live Performer), among others. Voting is currently open on the official website, and winners will be announced at the awards ceremony later this year.
