The much-anticipated “Amore Valentine's Gala,” held at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village (KCEV) on February 14, offered an evening of romance through live music. The event failed to attract a big turn up as expected but artistes on the performance lineup, led by Burundian music icon Kidum Kibido, Alyn Sano, and Gakondo singer Ruti Joel, made sure those who showed up enjoyed a memorable night of romance with unforgettable music. The venue was adorned in the spirit of Valentine's Day, with tables elegantly decorated in red and black, each featuring roses and other love-themed symbols. Couples filled most of the seats, giving out a romantic atmosphere as they eagerly awaiting their favorite artistes spark an evening of love with their music. While the audience was smaller than expected, the cozy setting created an intimate concert experience where every song felt personal and meaningful. A delayed start, powerful line-up Originally scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM, the show delayed for close to four hours as organisers were hoping to patiently welcome lovebirds to the venue a bit late. Revelers looked bored at the very beginning, unsure when exactly the show would start. The situation remained until DJ Sonia stepped on the stage at 9:45 PM setting the mood through a selection of classic love songs. Her playlist kept the audience engaged as they settled into the night’s romantic theme. Ruti Joel was the first to grace the stage, delivering an emotional performance that included songs like “Igikobwa”, “Amaliza”, “Cunda”, mostly from his album Musomandera. He extended his performance beyond his music as he would sing some love tunes including “Inkoramutima” by Meddy and “Eden”— as a tribute to the late Yvan Buravan. His stage captivated the audience, setting the tone for an evening of love communicating songs. While the audience remained subdued, their attentiveness was evident, indicating a deep appreciation for the music. As the night progressed, Alyn Sano took over with her signature electrifying stage presence. She opened with “None”, which got the audience sway in their seats. Her dynamic performance also included “Head”, “Tamu Sana”, and her latest release, “Fire”, a song she dedicated to her mother and to those facing personal struggles, encouraging them to persist against all odds. Despite the audience’s reserved energy- they seemed not responsive but attentive, Sano’s passion and vocal power injected an undeniable spark into the event, reminding everyone why she remains one of Rwanda’s most captivating performers. She could have performed even more music but time couldn’t allow do all she had planned to give her audience. And, of course, show headliner Kidum Kibido, needed ample time to dance with his fans, bringing the gala to a climactic close. Taking the stage with his signature charisma, he performed a number of iconic songs celebrating love such as “Ubushikiranganji”, “Mapenzi”, “Duzibiganza”, “Amosozi y'Urukundo” and more. His usual powerful vocals helped him maintain deep connection with his audience especially through his song “Amosozi y'Urukundo,” bringing some to their feet as they finally let loose and engaged. Kidum’s performance left a lasting impression, ensuring that the audience, however small, went home with cherished memories of romance. He described Kigali as a forever home, emphasizing its welcoming atmosphere, which is his strongest motivation to always headline a concert in the Rwandan capital.
