Lars Licken Ishimwe is the only new face in Cheikh Sarr’s national team roster which will compete at the AfroBasket qualifiers due in Morocco from February 21-23. The 1.93m guard currently plays club basketball at Tigers since leaving University of Alberta, Canada, for which he had featured until his graduation in 2024. The national team will enter camp on Monday before leaving for Morocco on Friday, February 14, where they will link up with team captain Dieudonne Ndizeye who plies his trade with MAS Fes in the Northern African country. Morocco will host both Groups A and C qualifiers. Group A teams include the hosts Morocco, Mali, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan, while Group C comprises Senegal, Cameroon, Gabon and Rwanda. Rwanda won only one game at Window 2 of the Afrobasket qualifiers held in Dakar, Senegal in November 2024, beating Gabon 90-63 in Group C. The victory brought Rwanda’s winless run to an end after the team had lost its first two games of the qualifiers. Each of the 20 national teams vying for a place at the 2025 AfroBasket have played at least three games each in the two previous qualifying windows.
