Renowned poet Junior Rumaga has unveiled a monthly poetry event dubbed ‘Siga Siga Sira’ as part of promoting poetry in Rwanda. The first event of its kind took place at Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village (KCEV) on January 31 where the poet led the stage alongside his emerging poetry collective known as ‘Ibyanzu’ and other celebrated poets like Essy Williamz, Saranda Poetess, Viviane Uwababyeyi and No Stress Ntare among others. Speaking to The New Times on Monday, February 3, Rumaga confirmed that the event will be held every month at KCEV. “We noticed that many artists, especially the youth, are returning to the poetry scene. This inspired SIGA Rwanda to create an initiative where artists in the poetry industry can showcase their talents. That’s how Siga Siga Sire came to life,” Rumaga explained. For Rumaga, ‘Siga Siga Sira’ is more than just a poetry event; it represents a movement aimed at fostering artistic growth and cultural appreciation. By bringing together both established and emerging artists, the initiative provides a space for creative expression while tackling important social and historical issues. Asked about the main purpose of Siga Siga Sire, Rumaga emphasized that the event aligns with the Ndi Umuco Wanjye (I Am My Culture) campaign, which he believes many people, especially younger generations, are losing touch with in today’s world. It’s about preserving our art, which plays a crucial role in the country's existence and longevity, especially in terms of our history. The protection of our culture and values forms the foundation of both the family and the nation. We must protect it at all costs,” Rumaga said. The renowned poet also noted that while more individuals are entering the poetry industry, there are few platforms available to help them showcase their talents, which is why Siga Siga Sire was created to showcase talent of emerging artists and give them the visibility they deserve. With the successful launch of Siga Siga Sire, Rumaga and his team have set the stage for a new tradition of poetic excellence in Rwanda. The initiative ensures that the country’s rich cultural heritage continues to thrive through the power of words and performance. Dates and line-ups for the second edition will be announced soon.
