Ishyaka ry'Intore, Rwanda’s newest cultural troupe, made a powerful debut with their concert, “Indirirarugamba,” a tribute to the valor and triumphs of Rwandans dating back to the reign of King Cyilima II Rujugiro and the victories of his successors. The performance showcased a mix of fresh talent in the Gakondo genre alongside celebrated artists like Ruti Joel, Edmond Cyogere, Gatore Yannick, and Mucyo w'Icyogere, many of whom were former members of the renowned Ibihame by'Imana ensemble. https://x.com/NewTimesRwanda/status/1883219631118418245 Held at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village on Saturday, January 25, the event began promptly at 7:30 PM. It opened with a subdued yet deliberate performance, gradually building intensity in sync with the traditional stage concept known as “Mu Ngamba.” ALSO READ: Rwandan dance legacy continues with Ishyaka ry'Intore formation by ex-Ibihame members In the sketch Indirirarugamba, the storyline unfolds with a call from the king, urging his soldiers to demonstrate the progress of the young Intore (warriors). Soon after, intelligence warns of an impending attack from neighboring forces, prompting the soldiers to head to Urugerero (the battlefield). They later return with victorious news, symbolized through Kuvuga Amacumu (the warriors’ victory chant). According to Edmond Cyogere, the philosophy behind the sketch draws inspiration from the reign of King Cyilima II Rujugiro. “During his reign, the king sent a battalion of young Intore to defend the nation in place of their elder brothers, who were stationed in the north and unable to leave their post,” Cyogere explained. “These underage warriors were tasked with securing victory or safeguarding the country's sovereignty at all costs—and they delivered.” ALSO READ: Why ‘Gakondo’ might be the future of Rwandan music Despite their youth, these warriors demonstrated unmatched bravery, fighting under the rallying cry ‘U Rwanda ruratera, ntiruterwa’ (Rwanda attacks but is never attacked). This spirit, Cyogere noted, is mirrored in Ishyaka ry’Intore, the newly formed troupe of young performers who are committed to reviving Rwanda’s cultural resilience and determination through Gakondo artistry. “The performance also honored the contributions of older generations, including war casualties and survivors, by portraying them as elders in the battle. It was a powerful reminder of their sacrifices and strength, values we hope all Rwandans will continue to embrace,” Cyogere emphasized. ALSO READ: Who are Rwanda’s top Gakondo stars?
