One of the things that can destroy someone’s career and stop them from excelling in their career is staying where they feel comfortable for years. A comfort zone is a low-stress situation or place where you feel at ease and/or safe. Staying within your comfort zone is appealing because it avoids risk. Isaac Muhoza who works in a corporate firm says that a lot of people like it where there is no stress and where it is not required to think further. “I have once fallen in a comfort zone and it felt like the safest place, but I was not growing as I always wanted to whether professionally or career-wise, a comfort zone tricks the mind to feel like that is where you belong, you don’t need to move, you don’t need to provide creative solutions or suggestions and that hinders someone’s success and opportunities to achieve great things,” he says. Elvira Umubyeyi who works at Iblue concepts an advertising agency thinks that not only do comfort zones restrict someone from succeeding but also result in missing out on opportunities. “You will find one employee in a company who wants to apply for a certain vacant post in their company fearing to do so because they are fearing the new responsibilities, because they will not be the same as on their current position, and yet maybe that employee has been dreaming about that post because of many opportunities that are there but because they want to stay in their comfort zone, they will find themselves on losing a lot of opportunities,” she says. Why it is important to move out of your comfort zone “There are a lot of opportunities out there for everyone, moving out a comfort zone permits someone to even discover things they didn’t they can do, it helps in knowing what you can achieve and where you can reach, it takes a lot of courage but stepping out and going for every opportunity also builds confidence in yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to,” says Alvine Umurerwa who works as an assistant in a shipping company.
