Rapper Marshall Mampa began the new year on a bad note after he, alongside other 101 people, were arrested on New Year’s eve [Friday night] at Bauhaus Bar in Nyamirambo for violating covid-19 guidelines. The rapper, born Jean Paul Mugabo, was arrested just a day after he was released from Nyarugenge Prison in Mageragere, where he served a four-year jail sentence, after he was found guilty of using drugs, precisely heroin. Mampa was among a host of celebrities who were at the bar during curfew hours before a police crew, in partnership with local leaders in Nyamirambo, arrived at the place during an operation which left 102 arrested at the bar. Others include actor Ernest Kalisa, popularly known as Samusure, and rapper Pilato among others. They were later taken to Nyamirambo Stadium where they spent the night. The New Times understands that the bar was also temporarily closed for operating during curfew hours as opposed to the cabinet resolutions of December 20, which state that bars are allowed to operate and close at 8pm. Police have so far reported that over 500 people were arrested for violating curfew hours Friday night in different bars across the country.
