May 15, 2024 – As Kigali proudly hosts the Africa CEO Conference this week, mobility sector disruptor Spiro – Africa’s Largest EV Player - is playing a pivotal role in advancing Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable development and green mobility. Kaushik Burman, Spiro’s CEO, said: “To all esteemed delegates of the Africa CEO Forum, welcome to Kigali! While you’re in Rwanda we hope you will experience first-hand the advancements that are shaping Africa’s ecological future. We have hundreds of clean, quiet electric motorbikes deployed in this beautiful city, and we hope you’ll find time to explore on the back of one of them!” Unveiling cutting-edge technology with new automated swap stations In alignment with their philosophy of continuous innovation, Spiro has announced the arrival of six new automated battery swap stations in Kigali, which will be officially launched during the conference. These state-of-the-art stations are revolutionising the ease of electric bike usage, swapping batteries quickly and allowing riders to get on with their day quicker. These facilities underscore Spiro’s dedication to providing fast, efficient service enhancements that promise to keep you moving without delay. The automated system allows users to replace their depleted batteries with fully charged ones in mere seconds—a testament to Spiro’s commitment to seamless, sustainable urban mobility. Why ‘taxi-moto’ riders prefer Spiro electric bikes Spiro’s electric bikes are a favourite among local ‘taxi-moto’ riders for their reliability and cost-effectiveness. These bikes are designed to reduce operating costs significantly, translating to higher take-home earnings for drivers. Furthermore, the robust design tailored to African road conditions ensures less downtime and more riding pleasure. The evolution of Kigali’s mobility landscape Since Spiro’s introduction in Kigali, the visual landscape of local transportation has transformed dramatically. From a monochrome array of red motorbikes, the streets are now vibrant with hundreds of green Spiro bikes. As Spiro bikes became a common sight, some riders began customising their bikes to stand out, adding personal flair to the functional design. This trend highlights the community’s embrace of their brand and the personal connection they feel towards their Spiro bikes. Empowering female riders: Driving towards gender equality Spiro is deeply committed to supporting female empowerment and gender equality, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals around Gender Equality and Decent Work and Economic Growth. The company has spent time working independently and with agencies to ensure better training for female drivers. Their initiatives in Rwanda include tailored programmes to encourage female participation in the e-mobility sector. By providing equitable access to electric bikes and fostering an inclusive riding community, Spiro is setting a standard for empowerment through mobility. A Pan-African vision for sustainable mobility Spiro began life in Benin and Togo two years ago and is now operating in Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, and Ghana. They have plans to launch in another four countries before the end of the year. With their sights set on doubling the number of bikes deployed by the end of 2024, they will soon announce plans for manufacturing bikes and batteries in Africa.
