Today, we celebrate the legacy of Mohamood Noordin Thobani, a Ugandan businessman whose simple act of humanity transcended borders and offered solace during a time of immense suffering. They had been thrown into different water bodies in Rwanda – either alive or dead – ostensibly, to send them back to Ethiopia where, according to a myth promoted by Hutu-power extremists, Tutsi came from. These victims, brutally murdered and cast aside, were denied even the dignity of a proper burial. He however, refused to stand idly by. He mobilised resources, organised recovery efforts, and ensured these innocent lives received a decent burial. His actions serve as a profound lesson for all of us. In the face of tragedy, it is not vast resources that are required, but a heart filled with empathy. Thobani's story is a testament to the fact that even ordinary individuals have the power to make a difference, to offer solace in the face of unimaginable loss. Furthermore, his act transcended national boundaries. He recognized the shared humanity that binds us all, and understood that the suffering of one community is a stain on the conscience of the world. Thobani's legacy serves as a powerful reminder that compassion knows no borders. As we move forward, let us carry Thobani's spirit with us. Let his actions inspire us to be more present, more engaged with the suffering of others.
