Prosecution seeks 3-year sentence for ‘Apostle Yongwe’ on fraud charges

The prosecution on Tuesday, February 27 requested the Gasabo Primary Court for a three-year jail sentence and a fine of Rwf 5 million for Joseph Harerimana, widely known as Apostle Yongwe. The Kigali preacher stands accused of defrauding individuals by soliciting money from them in exchange for promised miracles. ALSO READ: Apostle Yongwe: Money solicited was for prayer logistics, not for miracles The prosecution stated that Yongwe used threats and promises of favorable outcomes to drive people into parting with their money. Allegedly, Yongwe received substantial sums through various channels, including mobile money, MoneyGram, and Western Union. Furthermore, the prosecution urged the court to mandate Yongwe to return the money to all those who had given him funds with the expectation of positive outcomes. ALSO READ: RIB warns against ‘beliefs that put people in danger’ Yongwe, was apprehended last year in October on charges related to the abuse of trust and fraudulent acquisition of others' property. Yongwe pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him and prayed to court for forgiveness. Yongwe said that, as a pastor, he believes in the power of prayer and relies on God's will for outcomes. He cited his own experience when he prayed for bail upon arrest but did not receive it, asserting that this does not diminish his belief in God's miracles. The preacher acknowledged the criminal nature of his actions and expressed a willingness to end such behavior. He pledged cooperation with organizations to educate pastors about avoiding engaging in fraudulent practices. Yongwe admitted to lacking knowledge of the specific amounts he received. However, he committed to repaying everyone who entrusted him with their money. The court is scheduled to deliver the verdict on March 19.
