Prosecution to appeal against acquittal of Genocide suspect Twagirayezu

The National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA) has said it will appeal against the decision on Thursday, January 11, by the High Court Chamber of International and Transnational Crimes acquitting Wenceslas Twagirayezu, who is accused of participating in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. In a statement on Thursday, the NPPA said it was not satisfied with the court decision and that it will appeal against it. The prosecution is not satisfied with the court decision of the High Court, Chamber of International and Transnational crimes, acquitting TWAGIRAYEZU Wenceslas. The prosecution will appeal against this decision. — Rwanda Prosecution (@ProsecutionRw) January 11, 2024 Twagirayezu, 56, is accused of participating in mass killings and extermination of the Tutsi in former Commune Rwerere in present day Rubavu District, Western Province. He was extradited to Rwanda by Denmark in December 2018. Prosecution seeks life sentence for Twagirayezu, who was present in the room as the Nyanza District-based court rendered its verdict.
