Jong Kang wins Genocide memorial golf tournament

Kamanzi 39 South Korean Jong Kang won this year’s Genocide memorial golf tournament at the new 9-hole Kigali Golf Club course in Nyarutarama, on Saturday. Using the stableford format of play, which involves scoring points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole and combing all the age categories and gender together, Jong Kang emerged the winner scoring a total of 42 points, followed by his compatriot, Song Hochan, with 41 points. John Bosco Mulenga came in third place with 40 points, tied with Patrick Mulenga while Louis Kamanzi, the president of Kigali Golf Club, completed the top five, with 39 points at the end of the one-day event, that attracted over 60 golfer in different categories. The tournament was sponsored by the Ministry of Sports and Culture in conjunction with Rwanda Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC), in honour of golfers who died during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, including Anselme Sakumi, Dr Charles Munyangeyo and Gerard Bakaka, among others. The club captain, Dr Davis Kashaka, acknowledged the “great turn up” of about over 60 members of the club, who contributed undisclosed amount of money that will be given to a family of one of the members of Kigali Golf Club killed during the Genocide. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
