Police strengthen anti-crime campaigns in schools

The Rwanda National Police anti-crime awareness campaigns among the youth in schools have continued with the force reaching to thousands of students in Nyagatare, Gatsibo and Ngororero districts on Wednesday. The campaign is aimed at discouraging young people from engaging in unlawful acts, but play a significant role in reporting and preventing crimes. In Ngororero, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Marc Gasangwa, the District Police Commander engaged about 430 students of Groupe Scolaire Mahembe in community policing discussions, urging them to report anyone that tries to lure them into sale or consumption of narcotic drugs. He also introduced them to the services offered by Isange One Stop Centre, which was established to offer free medical, legal and psyschosocio services to victims of gender based violence and child abuse. In Nyagatare, police officers met with 427 students of Bright Academy and the school administration in a campaign held at the school, where they were urged to be ambassadors in fighting the common issues of Gender Based Violence and drug abuse especially among youth. “We believe youth can play a major part in fighting these offenses that’s why we encourage you to be ambassadors in crime prevention either at school or in your communities,” Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Claude Kaburabuza, the District Community Liaison Officer, told the students. IP Kaburabuza was accompanied by the in-charge of traffic and road safety in Nyagatare, Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Claude Ndamage, who also cautioned students against poor road use. During the campaign, students also formed an anti-crime club and elected their colleague, Innocent Zawadi as the club coordinator. Elsewhere, Inspector of Police (IP) Roger Rwakayiro, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) sensitised about 480 students of Ecole Secondaire de Gasange in Gatsibo about community policing and drug abuse. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
