Right Guards captain Eric Dusingizimana has said that good organisation was the key to the team’s triumph in the final of this year’s UA Exchange and Xpress Money 50-overs premier league. Right Guards beat pre-final favourites Indorwa by 5 runs at Kicukiro cricket ground on the way to their first ever major silverware. Indorwa CC beat Right Guards in the preliminaries. “We got back on the drawing board and worked hard on our areas of weakness which finally saw us triumph over Indorwa,” Dusingizimana said. Dusingizimana noted that it was their bowling that had betrayed them in the earlier stages of the tournament, but after their re-organisation things changed. He added, “This victory to me is a new dawn for the team, we have got the confidence that things can be possible.” Right Guards was formed in 2003 and its pioneers include the current RCA president Charles Haba, Manzi Benjamin and Chris Frean, the former deputy British High Commissioner to Rwanda. It was the first black dominated cricket team as others were dominated by Indians. It produced the biggest number of players who represented the country for the first time in the Division 3 World Cup cricket qualifiers in South Africa in 2004 where players like Richard Furama, Hamza Nkuutu, Emma Byiringiro and Robert Mugisha showcased their cricket talents. editorial@newtimes.co.rw
