Fun galore as Kenyans in Kigali celebrate independence jubilee

It was song and dances as Kenya turned 50 last week. Kenyans living in Kigali converged at Carwash Executive in Kimihurura, to celebrate the occasion.The party, organised by the Association of Kenyans living in Rwanda, was a success with Kenyan songs and dances marking the occasion.The chief guest, Kenyan High Commissioner to Rwanda, John Mwangemi, summed up the feelings that were in the air thus: It’s a great occasion and we are happy to be part of a generation that celebrated Kenya at 50. It’s a great birthday for our country.” To set the party rolling was a group of children of Cynsey Rachael, Christine Esperance, Anata Grace, Gloria Naliaka, Samantha Andenyi and Rashid Ngor who belted a number of songs, including the evergreen Malaika. They also sang a happy birthday song for Kenya.A number of Kenyans spoke of their experience in Rwanda and most of them said that Rwanda has set a good example in terms of cleanliness, orderliness and security that Kenya, in particular, and the rest of East Africa countries, in general, should copy.“We feel proud to be Kenyans living in Kigali. We feel home away from home here and we thank the people of Rwanda for their hospitality,” said one Mutua.“It’s great coming together to celebrate our country’s birthday. This is a wonderful feeling that words alone cannot describe,” added Dorcas Sarange, of Green Hills Academy.“I’m blessed to be Kenyan and part of this milestone in our history. We have had a chequered history but we are always coming together in happy and sad times. That marks our strength as a nation,” said Elizabeth Ongoro who has lived in Kigali for over ten years.
