The Nyamabuye Primary Court, in Muhanga District, on Wednesday August 16 issued a one-year prison sentence and imposed a fine of Rwf 500,000 on 41-year-old Jean-Pierre Ndababonye, who was found culpable of involuntary manslaughter related to the tragic deaths of 10 children who drowned in Nyabarongo River.

The incident transpired last month in Matazo Cell, Mushishiro Sector, Muhanga District.

He had chartered a boat to ferry the group of 10 children from the village, with the purported intention of engaging them in unloading roofing materials in Ndaro Sector, Ngororero District.

However, tragedy struck as the boat foundered midway through the journey, leading to the survival of just three children alongside Ndababonye.

According to law enforcement, the age range of the deceased children was between 11 and 15 years old.
