A model school with facilities for children with disabilities is set to roll off operations in Bugesera District.

The construction of the Rwf390 million school, due to open doors at the beginning of the next academic year, was sponsored by Plan International, an NGO that primarily promotes that rights and interests of children.

The building is fitted with special features to facilitate the needs of children with various forms of disabilities, including mobility, among others.

"This model school comes to ensure the right to access quality education, it has facilities for students with disabilities and will help tackle the challenge of long distances made by children,” said Alice Rwema Iribagiza, a communications officer with the NGO.

The school is located in Kanazi Cell, Nyamata Sector and can accommodate 540 students (classrooms) and 200 in dormitories.

The school has a laboratory, a computer lab, multipurpose hall, rain water harvesting facilities, sports facilities, among others.

The agreement signed between Plan and Bugesera says the district will finance the construction of the remaining facilities such as kitchen, water and electricity.

Israel Rwigema, the in-charge of education in the district, said they are currently mobilising funds to construct the remaining facilities so that the school can open next academic year.

Rwigema also revealed that the school is awaiting accreditation from Rwanda Education Board.
