Koonce appointed on African Taekwondo body

Rwanda Taekwondo Federation’s Technical Director, Martin Koonce has been appointed on the Africa Taekwondo Union (AFTU) as the in-charge of the Zone V region, the federation’s Secretary General Placide Bagabo has told Times Sport.

Rwanda Taekwondo Federation’s Technical Director, Martin Koonce has been appointed on the Africa Taekwondo Union (AFTU) as the in-charge of the Zone V region, the federation’s Secretary General Placide Bagabo has told Times Sport.Koonce, who is also the national team coach, has been called up to take the responsibility by the AFTU president, Ahmed Fouly, who doubles as the vice president of the World Taekwondo Federation.Bagabo said, "This appointment is good for Rwandan taekwondo in many ways on the African continent both from a competition and technical perspective.”"We’re his appointment and we need to make sure Rwanda takes full advantage of his position and contacts,” he added.Koonce’s main objective is to unite the zone through competitions and help those federations that have become inactive to operate again and more so effectively.The Zone V area is comprised of Burundi, Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.In region, Rwanda is the highest ranked nation according to the newly released results after the 2013 World Taekwondo championships that were held in Mexico from July 15-21.Rwanda is ranked sixth on the African continent and among the top 40 in the world. The six-day event attracted 168 countries from across the world.Meanwhile the Taekwondo federation will organize a three-day tournament dubbed the ‘Ambassador Cup’ on September 12-14 at Amahoro indoor stadium.It is expected to attract ten countries including; host Rwanda, DRC, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gabon and Congo Brazzaville.
