EAC pledges to support youth

The East African Community (EAC) has re-affirmed its commitment to support the youth, who are considered critical in championing the integration process.This was revealed on Monday by the bloc’s deputy secretary general in charge of productive and social sector, Jesca Eriyo in Arusha, Tanzania, during celebrations to mark the International Youth Day at the EAC headquarters."Celebrating this day here today demonstrates our firm commitment to involve the youth not only in the integration process but also in all efforts to move development forward,” Eriyo is quoted as saying, in a statement.She cautioned the youth against drug abuse, prostitution and teenage pregnancies and various kinds of human rights abuses that remain a major setback to the progression of young people.Drivers of development  Eriyo urged the youth to be proactive and take advantage of the opportunities created through EAC integration to improve their communities and their lives. She said development of any society depends on youth as the drivers of the development.The Deputy Secretary General briefed the youth on the progress realised in achieving the different stages of the integration, including the Customs Union, the Common Market, Monetary Union and Political Federation.The UN International youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognise efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities.
