Six people died on Sunday and 13 others sustained injuries after a speeding passenger service mini-bus overturned in Musenyi Cell, Karangazi Sector Nyagatare District.

Six people died on Sunday and 13 others sustained injuries after a speeding passenger service mini-bus overturned in Musenyi Cell, Karangazi Sector Nyagatare District.Four people who were critically injured have been admitted at University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) while the rest are at Nyagatare Hospital.Six students from the Teachers Training College (TTC) Matimba were among 19 passengers in the vehicle."Four men, including a student of Matimba Teacher Training Centre and two women died in the accident,” said Supt. Emmanuel Karuranga, the police spokesman, Eastern Region."Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle was speeding when it got a flat tyre. It lost control, veered off the road and rolled twice,” Karuranga said.Meanwhile, the executive secretary of Karangazi Sector, Emmanuel Murenzi said the accident was unusual but speeding was common on this particular highway."The irony is that you find passengers urging the driver to speed; this should be avoided and even drivers should respect the traffic rules,” Murenzi said.Premier’s message On his tweeter timeline, the Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi consoled the deceased’s families and wished the injured a quick recovery. He warned against over-speeding."Drivers, especially of passenger service vehicles should avoid speeding, because it has led to unnecessary deaths. The law shall take its course against those that will defy it,” he said, adding that everything is being done to ensure the injured received  adequate attention.
