Muslims in Rwanda join fellow believers around the world today to celebrate Eid el-Fitr and the conclusion of Ramadhan, the holy month of fasting.

Muslims who talked to The New Times described the end of Ramadhan as a remarkable period.

"I feel very happy. This month of Ramadhan is an entire season where you get many opportunities and a chance to be closer to God,” said a member of the Muslim community in Kigali’s Kimihurura area.

Describing what Eid el-Fitr means for him, he said: "There is this feeling that you are entering a new era with a clean heart. It’s time to celebrate and share a meal after the prayer.”

By press time, the Muslim leadership had not issued an official statement about Eid. And Sheikh Ibrahim Kayitare, the acting mufti, could not be reached as his phone was off.
