Editor,I completely agree – our system needs to be revised to consider the necessity for nurturing critical thinking skills. For one, the testing system is becoming less effective in that, indeed, it fosters more cramming than independent understanding of the content.Although, I don’t exactly know about "excellent teachers” because I wonder: For the problem to be apparent in institutions of higher education, wouldn’t that have been a failure at the very roots of the student’s education? Or do you suggest it is a problem that sneaks in somewhere along the way?Enthusiasm of instructors to instill a culture of viewing examinations, academic presentations, competitions and the like as an opportunity to be accountable for what they’ve learned and to enjoy the success they’ve earned as a result, and doing so at an early stage, is imperative and one way forward for example. All in all, great observation!Natasha, USAReaction to the story, "Logic and Aptitude tests: The tuning system of the intellect”, (Education Times, July 30)
