Peace Cup against Malaria champions, AS Kigali FC has changed their policy and will, begining next season, field only Rwandan players and plan to release all foreign players. The City of Kigali sponsored club follows in the footsteps of APR and Police FC, who have released all foreign players.According to the head coach Andrew Gasambugo ‘Casa’, the move is aimed at using only domestic players in bid to considerably change Rwandan football and propel the club to greater heights using home-gown solutions."We have been using some foreign players in our team in the past but effective next season everything has changed, we will use only Rwandese players,” revealed the former Sec Academy coach. He added, "By using many foreign players in the team, it was not helping the club’s philosophy of developing youth structures and giving young talented nationals the opportunity to shine at the big stage.” The played expected to be released include; Burundian pair Laudit Mavugo and Fidele Nduwimana as well as Ugandan trio Jimmy Mukubya, Peterson Mugisha and Godfrey Wakabu. The Rwandan football governing body, Ferwafa, also passed a law requiring all local clubs to use only three foreign players for next season. With Government having tasked the Ministry of Sports to ensure that Rwanda is among the top 10 footballing nations on the continent in five years, this appears to be the other major step in realising that target.
